I love to walk the dogs in my new neighborhood. A creek flows just a block or so away.
On my first visit I saw how this beautiful creek was filled with plastic trash.
I saw this lovely white heron peck up a shiny piece of trash for food. I couldn’t stop it from swallowing. I knew that the plastic will eventually kill it.
Grieving, I began to pick up as much plastic as I could and bundled it to throw it in the trash can.
This was the first of many bundles within just a couple of blocks.
Every day at least one bundle.
I posted pictures of them on Instagram with acknowledgements of the sources.(You can see some of them in the photos)
On Instagram, I met others around the world, who are fighting to stop the deluge of plastic in our rivers and oceans. I also met neighbors who began to clean up the stream, too. A little girl asked me what I was doing. On hearing my explanation she went to tell her Mommy. Another day, two little boys came to help me while their dad was fishing.
I am trying to avoid buying plastic containers – boy is that hard!.
What ideas do you have?
